How US live results work

civism shows what official election offices publish. It makes no calls, no projections and no estimates of its own.

§ 01What is counted

What is counted

What is counted

Votes as published by the official results feed of the state or county election office. civism never works out a share of the vote counted from precincts.

Progress units

Progress is the number of units reporting: precincts, counties or towns, whichever the feed counts. It is not a share of the vote counted. Where many ballots are cast by mail, 100% of precincts can report while ballots are still being counted.

§ 02Race status

Race status

Race status

CountingThe feed has not marked the count complete.

Count completeThe feed's own flag says the count is complete. The result is not yet certified.

CertifiedThe state or county has certified the result, or the certified results file has replaced the live rows.

Status comes only from the source. It never comes from a precinct percentage, a margin or an outside call, and it never steps back.

Who certifies, and when

Certification is the official, legal end of the count, done by the bodies below once counties finish their canvass. Dates and recount rules come only from the official pages linked on each row. The 2026 general election is on Nov 3, 2026. “Not confirmed” means civism has not yet confirmed it from an official source.

§ 03Sources

Sources

Sources

Official state and county election offices only, read from their public results feeds at the pace each allows. Feeds in use: Enhanced Voting (AZ, GA, ID, RI, UT, VA, WA), Clarity (CO, IA, SC, WV), Civix (TX), and state files for CA, FL, IN, LA, MN and NC. When an office refuses requests, civism stops asking and the race shows “awaiting official results”.

§ 04Expected-vote estimate

Expected-vote estimate

Expected-vote estimate

The estimate says how much of the vote is probably in: the votes counted in a race divided by an expected total vote for the same place. It is not a prediction of who will win or by how much, and civism never shows it next to a winner, a probability or a call.

Tier 1, official ballots: where a state publishes both the ballots counted and the ballots still outstanding, the expected total is their sum, from that state's own file.

Tier 2, prior election: otherwise the expected total is the ballots counted in the last election of the same kind (a midterm with the 2022 midterm, a presidential year with the previous presidential year), from the federal Election Administration and Voting Survey. It is not adjusted for changes in registration.

Tier 3, no basis: where neither exists, civism shows precincts reporting and the race status only.

The page names the source and its date and rounds to a whole percent. A tier 2 figure also says which election it is based on. Votes counted in one race are compared with ballots, so a race with many blank votes reads slightly low.

The estimate is hidden when there is no basis, when the votes counted are more than 10 percent above the expected total, when a tier 1 file is more than 48 hours old, and once the race is count complete or certified, because the official status then replaces it.

Corrections

When a feed revises a number or a status, civism records the change here with its date, the contest, what changed and the official source. Each affected race links to its entries.
